about
This is a song about growing up around my grandparents and family in the pines of South Carolina.
lyrics
Charlie, Hattie, Amos, and Florine
They raised up their families back when times were lean
In the Horse Creek Valley towns of Valcluse and Graniteville
They went to church on Sunday and they worked in Cotton Mills
Amos saved his money and by nineteen forty-five
Bought some land and built a homestead in the South Carolina Pines
When Charlie's oldest daughter married Amos' oldest son
They all moved in together to help raise the grandchildren
Down along the trolley line in those South Carolina pines
That's the place where I spent some time
Surrounded by the family of Charlie, Hattie, Amos, and Florine
Now I know all about it cause that's where I was raised
With my sisters and my cousins those were some good old days
We'd play out in the woods in old buildings and junk cars
Eating homemade ice cream on the front porch neath the stars
Me and Cousin Tony were the only boys around
We got in lots of mischief sometimes we would get found
We stole a watermelon once Amos made us come clean
We had a buried treasure Uncle Tommy's magazines
Down along the trolley line in those South Carolina pines
That's the place where I spent some time
Surrounded by the family of Charlie, Hattie, Amos, and Florine
Charlie passed away when I was one years old
But I know all about him from the stories Hattie told
She'd talk about the things that Charlie used to do and say
You could hear in Hattie's voice she missed Charlie everyday
Amos taught us right from wrong and many other things
Like how to make a June bug fly tied to a string
Florine kept us fed with collards and sweet tea
Fig preserves and cobblers filled with blackberries
Down along the trolley line in those South Carolina pines
That's the place where I spent some time
Surrounded by the family of Charlie, Hattie, Amos, and Florine
Amos left this world when I was sixteen
Twenty-five years later Hattie followed then Florine
My sisters and my cousins all got families of their own
And a part of me is missing cause the old homestead is gone
When I down near Graniteville I like to take the time
To go and see their resting place underneath the pines
I am proud to be part of the legacy
Of Charlie, Hattie, Amos, and Florine
Down along the trolley line in those South Carolina pines
That's the place where I love to be
Standing in the company of Charlie, Hattie, Amos, and Florine
