lyrics

Ethel was an old gas pump I found in a junkyard
Her name was printed right above her face
She was over six-foot full of rust and yellow jackets
I hauled that old gas pump to my place

I was working for my dad in the gas pump business
So I knew how to take Ethel apart
I painted her blue with an eyeball on her forehead
Ethel was my gas pump work of art

Ethel was the center of attention
For years my friends would come around and see
That blue one-eyed wonder standing in my corner
Ethel the junkyard refugee

Now Ethel was real good at keeping books and record albums
She even kept some whiskey bottles too
She could be a radio a tall clock or a lamp post
There weren't nothing Ethel couldin't do

Ethel was a point of conversation
My friends would all suggest what she could be
That blue one-eyed wonder standing in my corner
Ethel the junkyard refugee

After I got married my wife said there's gonna be changes
She and Ethel don't see eyes to eye
So I moved her to the front porch and the first time that I looked up
I saw cars driving slowly by

Ethel was an overnight sensation
Folks would come from miles around to see
That blue one-eyed wonder standing on my front porch
Ethel the junkyard refugee

Now its beem fifty years since I hauled Ethel from that junkyard
We both have grown some rust along the way
Ethel lives a quiet life posing as a birdhouse
As for me I'm getting old and gray

Then one day a man came up and told us quite a story
He offered to take Ethel with him
He restored old gas pumps to their former glory
So I said goodbye to my old friend

Now Ethel is a showpiece at conventions
But to me she will always be
That blue one-eyed wonder standing in my corner
Ethel the junkyard refugee

Yeah Ethel is a showpiece at conventions
But to me she will always be
That blue one-eyed wonder standing in my corner
Ethel the junkyard refugee

Ethel was an old gas pump I found in a junkyard
